Commander Elarien

Commander of the elven delegation. A will that cannot be broken. There are few who possess the razor-sharp authority of Elarien.

When the mask becomes armour.

Commander of the elven delegation. A woman of razor-sharp authority. A will that does not easily bend.

Elarien understands the value of restraint. Measured in her words and unwavering in her convictions, she has little patience for cruelty. Less, for injustice. And none at all, for those foolish enough to mistake her composure for weakness.

She does not need to raise her voice to command a room.

She rarely needs to speak twice.

Because Elarien has spent a lifetime learning how to be watched. Every word, considered. Every expression controlled. Every weakness concealed, before someone else can discover how to use it.

Where Aria burns, Elarien freezes.

And that distinction was important to me when writing the women of Threads of Fate.

Female strength is too often presented as though it has a single shape. The woman who fights. The woman who shouts. The woman who rejects every expectation of femininity, and proves herself by behaving more like the men around her.

Elarien does something rather different. She understands expectation. More importantly, she understands how to use it.

Her femininity is neither weakness, nor something she needs to discard in order to possess authority. Her restraint is deliberate. Her composure, cultivated. She knows the power of silence. Of observation. Allowing another person to underestimate her, and discovering their mistake only when it is far too late to matter.

Yet, armour is still armour.

And beneath Elarien’s composed exterior lies an iron resolve forged through impossible choices, old obligations and wounds that have never healed.

She has learned, in her own way, that survival sometimes demands silence.
She has also learned that there comes a point when silence becomes surrender.

That tension lies at the heart of Elarien.

When I first started writing her, I always had one question in mind.

What does it cost to become what everyone expects you to be?

Because expectation can become its own kind of prison. Duty dictates on which side of the battle you stand. Lineage tells you who to become. Politics tells you which parts of yourself may be shown and which must remain safely hidden.

Eventually, the performance becomes so practiced that even you can begin to forget where the mask ends.

And Elarien is very, very good at wearing hers.

As old alliances begin to fracture and the world edges closer to war, she is forced to navigate a landscape where every decision carries consequences far beyond herself. There are loyalties to preserve, responsibilities she cannot simply abandon, and sacrifices expected of her before anyone thinks to ask whether she is willing to make them.

Elarien understands all of this. Though, understanding it, does not mean accepting. Because beneath the restraint, lies something stubborn. Something hidden.

A woman who has spent her life being told what duty requires, and has quietly retained the audacity to believe that her choice should matter too.

That is where Elarien and Aria are perhaps more alike than either initially appears.

Their rebellion simply speaks in different languages.

Aria’s rage is fire.
Elarien’s is ice.

One threatens to burn through everything placed around her. The other waits, watches and chooses precisely where to crack.

And perhaps, that is the most dangerous thing about Commander Elarien.

People mistake her silence for surrender. Mistake femininity, for fragility. May even mistake her restraint for obedience.

Though, she will rarely make the same mistake about them…

Some women inherit destiny.
Others, choose it.
